I debated what to call this post for a while. It’s not really a DIY project – I’m not making anything from scratch. But it IS a craft, and it IS an idea for existing materials that you might not have thought of! AND it only took me about 20 minutes to complete. The Quick Craft series has officially begun.
As I’ve mentioned time and time again, I am in one of my happiest moods when I’m strolling the aisles of Michael’s, particularly at night when it’s quiet. I went in this time with every intention of buying tiles to make photo coasters (perhaps another time) but they were completely out. Cue aimless wandering in search of a craft – maybe something to jazz up my new work desk? Then, I saw these.
Last weekend in Avalon we were perusing some of the beach décor shops and I found myself thinking on multiple occasions that I could very easily (and inexpensively) recreate some of the $50 items I was seeing. One of those items was a gorgeous weathered sign with the coordinates of Avalon painted on it. Less than a week later, and my musings are coming true!
I used regular acrylic paint to do a white base coat, but you could of course leave the wood exactly as is – it’s a beautiful color! And I originally planned on using stencils for the numbers but it turns out I got rid of the ones I had in mind. Freehand is more authentic anyway, right? Humor me…
The best part – the string for the sign comes from the top, not the back, making these babies double-sided! Coordinates on one side, town name on the other. The potential for this project is ENDLESS. Married last name on one side, wedding date on the other. “Open” on one side and “Closed” on the other for a beautiful little boutique! Be creative – let me know what you decide to paint : )
Also considering sanding the front and back down once they’ve dried fully for a day or two… Just to give the sign more of an authentic “weathered” look. What do you think?
I’m excited about this series – I frequently make gifts for people and I’ll be able to share those ideas and processes right here! Hopefully other people will benefit from my spontaneous Michael’s purchases… I highly recommend signing up for the coupon emails though ; )
