It feels crazy that the world is still spinning after losing Alicia almost a week ago. Viewing, mass, luncheon, memories and tears with so many people who loved her, and it honestly still doesn’t feel completely real yet. And similarly, it feels marginally silly to post something so trivial instead of talking about how beautiful she was. But on the other hand, our Lishy loved fashion and part of me thinks she’d probably already blinged out a beach hat of her own : )
A woven beach hat of any variety (though the floppy sunhat has the most room for design)
– here are a few at $15 or under!
Embroidery thread / ribbon / string
A needle wide enough for the thread you’ve chosen
A pencil, unless you’re fantastic at hand-lettering (go you!)
-Sketch out what you want on your hat – a few words, a quote, lyrics, or a random design. Doesn’t matter, but I highly suggest you lightly draw it out with your pencil so you’ve got some guidelines to follow as you sew!
-Grab a loooooong piece of thread (you can always trim it afterwards!) and knot the very end. Begin your design by poking your needle up through the brim of your hat so that the knotted end is underneath.
-Keep your stitches very close together so you have a solid looking line throughout your entire design. The best part? Straw (or whatever synthetic material your hat is made of) is pretty forgiving when it comes to holes – if I hadn’t gone exactly where I’d intended, the mess-up wasn’t obvious at all!
Happy DIY-ing! Thanks for the awesome idea Anne! : )
