Another unintended blog break! #oops. Thanksgiving week was crazy busy, as I’m sure it was for all of you too. We packed in a lot of fun in only 4 days off so I thought I’d stop by and share one of those adventures here today! For my mom’s birthday gift each year she prefers an “experience” rather than an actual physical gift – you may remember our wreath-making workshop last year? For the 2017 edition, we chose to visit the new Board & Brush studio here in Glen Mills and had an incredible time creating custom wood signs of our choosing!
Here’s how it works: Head to the website of your nearest B&B location, where you’ll be prompted to fill out an online reservation form for the Pick Your Project class of your choosing – you can also host private parties! You’ll browse the gallery of wood signs, boxes and trays, include your choices in your reservation (so they can have your stencils ready) and pay online when you book.
The day of, B&B suggests showing up a few minutes early to the studio to get settled. Check with your location, but most studios allow you to BYOB snacks and beverages, so you can set up a little area with your food and drink before you begin creating your wood signs!
Your instructors will begin the class by introducing themselves and familiarizing you with the tools on your table and a general overview of the process. Everyone begins by sanding down their wood to prep for the stain. Some choices needed to be assembled (my mom’s) and some were ready to go (mine!) but everyone takes about the same amount of time to complete their wood signs.
After sanding, you’ll distress – the most fun part! Our room got so loud with everyone hammering away with different tools to create beautiful subtle distressing before we started staining. You’ll pick your stain and coat your entire project before moving on to assembly and stenciling.
Stenciling was definitely the hardest part – they adhere to your wood signs so you have to be SUPER careful laying them out and making sure the tiny pieces in the middle of your letters stick in the proper places, without bubbling. Once we had that part complete we began painting!
Nothing took too long to dry – and they did have fans available to expedite the process – so once you were done painting you just waited a little while longer before taking your gorgeous sign home to hang. Some people chose to wax their finished wood signs before leaving but it alters the paint color a little so I kept mine as it was.
We had a blast at Board & Brush and I can’t wait to go back! This would make a great bachelorette, work or birthday party – and these signs would also make incredible gifts, especially for a housewarming.
I hope you all had an amazing holiday weekend!
