I’m a firm believer that you should never stop “dating” your significant other, no matter how long you’ve been together. Getting familiar and comfortable around your person is wonderful, but getting complacent in your relationship can definitely cause unnecessary issues. That being said – we’re ALL busy. Ridiculously busy. I swear if I just had 2 extra hours in the day, I could be Beyonce. But even Queen B and Jay need a break every now and then – So can someone please send her this awesome list of 20 different summer date night ideas?! And then we can be best friends?! Excellent.
Without further ado… 20 new ideas for date nights (or days) in no particular order! You may have to get a little creative on Google to adapt to your hometown, but most of these should work no matter where you live and love : )
Recreate your first date – For us, that was watching the Notebook on my family room couch in high school… after lying to both of our parents about where we would be that night! #oops #grounded
Big City Hunt – I found a Groupon for this awesome activity and immediately added to my cart. A “self led smartphone scavenger race” that leads you around your city to solve riddles and puzzles – but you can start your hunt whatever time works best for you!
Window Shopping – Stroll around your city or a few shopping areas and just browse – talk about what you’d buy first if you won a $100 gift card to that store. OR play “Ten Dollars at Target” and see who can come up with the most creative gift(s) for the other in a half hour or less!
Lawn Game Olympics – Gather all the games you’ve got (cornhone, Kan Jam, bocce, ladder golf) and set up space in your yard or a local park or field. Grab another couple or two and keep score – winners buy the first round of beer!
Drive-In Movie – I have never done this and I want to SO BADLY. There’s one kinda sorta near us, but I think it would be totally worth the drive. Pack food and drinks if you’re allowed!
Play “Chopped” – Exactly how it sounds! Assign ingredients (plenty of examples online) and see who can create the best dish!
Escape the Room – Unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard of Escape Rooms. If you can find one that allows only 2 people, go for it! Otherwise, make it a double/triple date night – or see who you get randomly paired up with at the location! Important: BE PATIENT ; )
Museum/Park After Dark – If you’re local to the Philadelphia area, check out “Science After Hours” at the Franklin Institute or “Bike and Hike” at Hagley Museum in DE! We had a blast picnicking and sampling Dogfish Head last summer and I can’t wait to go again.
Be a Tourist – In your own city! Download a few free audio guides to a few historical sites nearby and wait for an afternoon with great weather to stroll around and refresh some of the things you’ve forgotten since grade school – or try something unique like this Mural Mile walking tour in Philly!
Stargaze – If you’ve got a telescope and working knowledge of constellations (go you!) just spread out a few blankets, pack a cooler and your date night is good to go. If you’re like me (star challenged) download this app first! But don’t forget the cooler ; )
Cocktail “Party” – Just like with Chopped, find ingredients for new fancy cocktails and make 2 of each to taste! Pro Tips: Serve a few snacks that go along well with your choices, search Spotify for jazzy background music & check the “mini” section of your liquor store to save a few bucks, just in case you don’t love the finished product!
Datebox – “Everything you need for a fun and creative date night, delivered to your door every month.” Taking all the work right out of it! We just got our first box – I’ll let you know how it goes : )
Arcade Prize Exchange – Each person gets a set amount of quarters and a certain amount of time (stick together for a few games, then spread out for a few) – then use your winnings to choose prizes for each other! Or if you’re somewhere like Barcade, loser buys beers ; )
Chase Waterfalls – Channel your inner TLC, search for the nearest waterfall hike in your area and go! Do I even need to remind you at this point to pack snacks and beverages? No one likes a hangry hiker….!
Summer Music Series – Get on the internets and search “summer concert series near me” – I can almost guarantee there will be a free event within a reasonable distance of your home. You can even bring the kids to this date night! If you reaaaally want… ; )
DIY Beer or Wine Tasting – Check out my post on how to hold your own at-home beer tasting! We’ve already got two wine tastings on the books for July so be sure to check back for that post as well #shamelessselfpromotion #butalsotheresbeer
“Stay”cation – Pick a small town 1-2 hours away and take a day trip! Explore downtown, grab lunch somewhere new and just generally “get away” without actually having to go very far at all.
Top Golf – COMING SOON to Mount Laurel and I could NOT be more excited! Tim got me into golf in a major way (pun unintended but I’m rolling with it) and I can’t wait to swing some clubs and share some grubs with my handsome date. Check for one near you!
Long Distance Meetup – Similar to the staycation: If you’re currently long distance from your favorite human, find a town halfway between you (here’s hoping your driving distance will be a few hours max!) and plan a weekend away! Hole up in a hotel or Airbnb, binge watch your favorite shows, go on a dinner date – all the things you’re missing while living in separate towns. And stay strong – if it’s meant to last, the distance will be worth it in the end : )
Take a Class Together – Try something new! Take a spin class, or go to boot camp. Learn how to make bread, paint a canvas or home brew beer. Search for opportunities for adult learning in your area or get creative – have a skilled friend over to teach something at-home!
Phew. There you have it – 20 different date night ideas to keep that spark alive this summer! Did I leave anything off? Leave your best plans in the comment section so we can all benefit from your fun – and don’t worry, even if it’s “basic,” someone else (me) might not have even thought about it. Happy dating! : )
