Isn't it ironic that during summer – the season where we are most likely to be half naked in front of friends, family and strangers alike – we also tend to literally plan events around eating and drinking…? Don't get me wrong, I love a good grill & chill. But a burger with all the fixins' and fries on the side do NOT translate to a bikini ready body – food babies are real, y'all. I get in 4 workouts every week, Monday through Thursday – but what about the weekend? What about beers on the beach, no shower happy hour and trips to get ice cream? Balancing this ish is hard. It is. So how do we find that mysterious balance between having fun and staying fit?
- Be flexible. If you get word on a Friday that you're heading to the beach Saturday morning – schedule a run for the afternoon and pack your sneakers. If your coworkers decide that Thursday happy hour is necessary, which means skipping your pre-planned boot camp, sign up for Friday morning instead.
- Be prepared! Always have a gym bag handy in your car packed with everything you might need for a workout or a jog. That way, you can't use the excuse: "But I didn't have a sports bra!"
- Plan social activities that involve actually BEING active! You can canoe down a river and burn calories while you drink a few beers. You can organize a game of side yard volleyball after you grill dinner. You can meet a friend for a walk after mimosas at brunch! You CAN. So you should.
- Ignore that hangover and try to get your sweat sesh in the next morning – The endorphins you produce will help curb cravings and release some of the toxins in your body! My pals over at Aaptiv put together these tips to help you feel your best before you start:
We got in a few great workouts during Krista's bachelorette weekend and it was an awesome way to be social with the group while still balancing our desire to be healthy. Some things are best enjoyed in moderation – but summer adventures are not one of them, and neither is fitness ; )
Most people don't love cardio, and Aaptiv knows that. They're offering my readers a 30 day free trial for their high-energy, do-anywhere audio workout classes with the code BURPEES. I'm going to try it out with a short run this week so I'll let you know what I think! I'm also currently loving FitRadio for at-home boot camp workouts. The app provides DJ playlists in tons of high energy genres AND you can add interval information to know when to switch exercises or rest. This is what I used during our #BigBassBach boot camp! ; )
How do YOU find the balance between fit and fun, especially during the summer?!
