“For you? ONE DOLLAR!”
I don’t know if it’s because my dollar store is particularly nice and well-stocked, but I’m probably in there once a week at minimum. I honestly go just to browse sometimes – they add new items pretty frequently! I stop by before parties or long weekends away to grab paper products, gift bags, solo cups, etc. I run in for crafting supplies, or when I’m short on printer paper. And lately, I’ve even been grabbing snacks there to keep in my desk at work! Because, why not?
I’ve seen SO many posts on Pinterest about Dollar Store DIY projects, but when I clicked through to the links, the idea was either something I would never use, or involved materials my dollar store doesn’t seem to stock. So, I decided to make my own! Using 1 craft supply I had at home (gold spray paint) and $5 worth of supplies from the store, I created some pretty awesome items that i’ll actually be using – maybe even this weekend!
First up, Gold Dipped Wine Cups. These were by far the easiest project ever. Simply unsnap the bottoms from the tops, lay them out on a dropcloth, and spray paint until covered. You could do any color, multiple colors, or use painter’s tape to create shapes (like polka dots!) The possibilities are endless, and the result is an adorable way to make cheap glasses seem a little extra special.
Our next project was a bit more complicated, mostly because I wasn’t sure how spray paint would work with glass. But these abstract Gold Dipped Shot Glasses turned out okay in the end! I like the “messy” look so I wasn’t super careful with my spraying, but you could easily remedy this with painter’s tape for a straighter edge, and multiple light coats. I chose to make little “capes” out of butcher paper instead ; )
Last but not least, an idea I found on Pinterest, modified to make my own. I’ve been seeing a lot of tiered party trays on the internets, but I knew I wanted to adapt the project by using a bowl instead. We are ALL about chips and dips over here! So, I present the Black & Gold Appetizer Serving Station. Take one plastic plate, one smaller plastic bowl, and one glass candlestick – Paint everything, nothing, or design it to your liking, then hot glue the pieces together to form the tiers! Easy peasy.
One important thing: I would not recommend dishwasher-ing any of these projects, as the spray paint may chip or completely wash off. (I do plan on spraying a clear coat over all of these for added longevity.) Dismantle the cups to wash the tops and reuse- that’s my plan! For the shot glasses, carefully handwash the inside and lay facedown to dry. The serving station might be tricky – handwash the inside of the bowl, but be VERY gentle doing the same to the plate!
Have you done any Dollar Store DIY upgrades, or any DIY upgrades at all? Comment with a link to your project – I can’t wait to try more ideas! Cheers, and have a safe & happy weekend!
